OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Flu-related deaths in Washington have surged to their highest level since the 2017-2018 season, with 296 fatalities reported, and health officials are urging vaccination as spring break approaches.

The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) reported that while flu activity has diminished from a significant spike that began in late January, it remains high across communities. “Though flu activity is decreasing, it’s still at high levels in our communities across the state,” said Dr. Tao Sheng Kwan-Gett, the state health officer.

Dr. Kwan-Gett emphasized the importance of flu vaccinations, stating, “Flu vaccines are the best way to protect you and your family against serious illness, hospitalization, and even death from the flu.” He advised individuals to get vaccinated soon, noting, “It can take the body a couple of weeks after vaccination to build up maximum protection, so now is the perfect time to make sure you and your loved ones are up to date in preparation for spring break travel and activities.”

Health experts particularly recommend vaccines for vulnerable populations, including young children, older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with specific health conditions. Additionally, the CDC indicates that it is safe to receive a flu shot alongside other vaccines.

For those seeking a flu vaccination, the DOH provides resources to locate nearby pharmacies. By entering a zip code on their website, individuals can access a list of local vaccination options.
