Ford Issues Major Recall Affecting Over 1.1 Million Vehicles

DEARBORN, Mich. — Ford Motor Company announced a significant recall impacting nearly 1.1 million vehicles in the United States due to a software issue that could prevent rearview cameras from functioning properly. This recall was communicated to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on May 27, with affected vehicles spanning 2021 to 2024 model years.
Vehicles involved include popular models such as the Bronco, F-150, and Edge, along with various SUV models like the Escape, Corsair, and Mustang. The malfunctioning software may result in delayed or frozen rearview camera images, which increases the risk of accidents.
Ford is addressing the issue through over-the-air updates, allowing many owners to resolve the problem without a trip to the dealership. According to the company, notification letters will be sent to affected vehicle owners starting June 16, with detailed follow-ups once a remedy is fully ready.
This recall follows an NHTSA investigation launched in January 2025 after receiving numerous complaints about rearview camera failures in the F-150. In April, Ford recognized the specific software failure mode tied to this ongoing issue.
In addition to the rearview camera recall, Ford recently addressed other recalls involving issues like engine overheating, which could lead to fires, and software failures that may impact dashboard displays and vehicle controls. One recall involves around 30,679 2024 Nautilus vehicles, where multimedia module software could cause critical display screens to malfunction.
Ford has urged customers to monitor their vehicles for any unusual behavior and to park and shut off their engines if severe issues arise. Owner notifications for these concerns are set to go out on different dates, depending on the specific recall.
The company has not disclosed the total projected cost or the number of incidents linked to the rearview camera issues but noted they were aware of at least one crash resulting in property damage. The recalls threaten to impact Ford’s reputation and financial standing, as they handle one of the largest safety-related issues in recent history.
