Ford Recalls 317,000 Mustang Mach-E Models Over Lockout Issue

DETROIT, Mich. — Ford has announced a recall affecting over 300,000 Mustang Mach-E electric SUVs due to a fault that could leave drivers locked out or trapped inside their vehicles. The company has instructed dealers to stop sales and deliveries of the affected models immediately.
The recall includes approximately 317,000 Mustang Mach-E vehicles, spanning model years 2021 through 2025, and follows concerns of an electronic latch malfunction. In case of an unexpected 12V battery discharge, the door latches may fail, causing lockouts.
According to Ford, no injuries or accidents related to this issue have been reported. However, the potential for being locked inside or outside the vehicle has raised significant concerns among users.
Ford is working on a software update to address this issue, with plans to release it in the third quarter of 2025. Until the update is available, the stop-sale order will remain. Current owners may need to visit a dealership to install the update, rather than being able to install it remotely.
Recent reports from owner forums have highlighted numerous incidents where individuals became trapped in their vehicles due to this fault. In one case, a nine-month-old baby was locked inside a Mach-E for 40 minutes. Emergency services had to break a window to free the child when attempts to unlock the car failed.
Ford spokesperson Mike Levine noted, “This could result in a serious injury, especially in hot weather.”
Customers can expect to receive written notice regarding the recall starting June 23, 2025. Additional details regarding the software fix will also be shared in these notifications.
