Former Canterbury forward, Jackson Topine, has recently initiated a groundbreaking legal action against the Canterbury Bulldogs, seeking $4 million in damages. The lawsuit stems from an incident during a training session where Topine alleges he was subjected to what he describes as ‘unlawful corporal punishment.’

Topine’s legal team has filed a statement of claim in the Supreme Court of New South Wales detailing the training session on July 18, 2023. The claim asserts that Topine was forced to wrestle up to 35 teammates as a form of punishment for reportedly being late to training.

The former Australian Schoolboy player asserts that this ordeal led to severe mental and physical repercussions, causing what his legal team describes as ‘deprivation of liberty’ and ‘unlawful corporal punishment.’

According to Topine’s lawyers at Kings Law Group, the $4 million lawsuit contends that the Bulldogs terminated Topine’s contract illegally and that he has not been able to play since the incident occurred.

In response to the allegations, the Canterbury Bulldogs have issued a statement refuting several claims put forth in the lawsuit. The club emphasized its commitment to mental health and refrained from commenting on specific individuals involved in the case.

Travis Touma, the Bulldogs’ Head of Performance, is singled out in the statement of claim, with allegations that he orchestrated the punishment that Topine endured during the training session. Additionally, head coach Cameron Ciraldo and club executive Phil Gould are anticipated to play pivotal roles in the legal proceedings.

Furthermore, the court documents reveal the emotional distress and physical discomfort Topine experienced as a result of the training session. The incident has been described as a humiliating and degrading experience that has had a lasting impact on Topine’s well-being.

This legal action marks a significant development in the sporting world, shedding light on player welfare and professional standards within NRL clubs. The case is expected to unfold in court, with both parties presenting their positions and evidence regarding the events that transpired.
