Former Governor-General’s Wife Dallas Hayden Passes Away Months After Husband’s Death
Dallas Hayden, the wife of the former governor-general and once leader of the Labor Party, Bill Hayden, has sadly passed away. The 87-year-old Mrs. Hayden peacefully passed away at her home in Queensland, surrounded by her family. The Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, described her as a person of remarkable warmth.
In a statement, Albanese said, “She spent many years playing supporting roles in public life, and her optimism, quiet courage, and strength of character were a powerful source of inspiration for her beloved husband, Bill. On behalf of the Australian government and the Australian Labor Party, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Dallas Hayden’s family and friends.”
Her demise comes only months after the passing of her husband, who served as federal opposition leader and was governor-general in 1989. Mrs. Hayden’s family expressed their admiration for her, highlighting her unique love and connection with people. They emphasized the relationships she fostered, which helped her husband succeed in public life.
In a statement, her family said, “Dad spoke often of his love for Dallas, and the invaluable love and support she provided as an equal in their relationship, which allowed him to dedicate over 40 years to public service. He always said he could not have achieved any of it without her. For Mum, the loss of Dad was unbearable, and she was heartbroken and devastated at the loss of Dad in October last year.”
In 2020, Mrs. Hayden was honored with the appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia for her significant contributions to the Australian community. Governor-General David Hurley praised her tireless efforts in supporting community groups and her dedication as the patron of various charitable organizations.
Hurley stated, “Visitors and staff at Government House remember her warmth, genuine interest in others, and her unwavering passion and commitment to service. Linda and I were grateful for the opportunity to spend time with her at her husband’s funeral, who they were married to for over 60 years. Their partnership was tremendous, and Australia was enriched by her service.”
Mr. and Mrs. Hayden are survived by their children Georgina, Ingrid, and Kirk.
