Former Ndp Leader Ed Broadbent To Receive State Funeral

The Honourable Ed Broadbent, a distinguished academic and renowned politician who dedicated nearly 24 years of his life serving Canadians in the House of Commons, will be honored with a state funeral. The former leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, Ed Broadbent passed away on January 11, 2024, at the age of 87. Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, made the announcement on January 15, confirming that the state funeral will take place in Ottawa on January 28.

Throughout his impressive political career, Ed Broadbent led the New Democratic Party for 14 years in the 1970s and 1980s. As the NDP leader, he faced off against four different prime ministers, including Pierre Trudeau and Brian Mulroney. Broadbent’s leadership and dedication paved the way for the NDP to achieve its best electoral results until Jack Layton broke that record in 2011, leaving an indelible mark on Canadian politics.

The state funeral will provide Canadians with a solemn opportunity to pay tribute to Ed Broadbent’s extraordinary legacy. He was recognized as a Companion of the Order of Canada for his dynamic advocacy for positive reform and as a champion for disadvantaged individuals worldwide. A selfless advocate for equality and justice, Broadbent’s commitment to helping others never faltered. His passing will be deeply felt by the nation, and the state funeral will allow Canadians to celebrate his remarkable contributions.
