Wildfire In Western North Carolina

POLK COUNTY, N.C. — Firefighters are working tirelessly to contain four uncontained wildfires in Polk County, North Carolina. The blazes have forced local authorities to issue evacuation orders and have sparked a statewide emergency response.

As of late Saturday, the Deep Woods Fire remains at 0% containment, having scorched at least 1,713 acres. Polk County officials reported that multiple structures have been lost, including one home deemed a total loss. In contrast, the Fish Hook Fire has achieved 50% containment and has affected 199 acres, damaging three homes. The larger Black Cove Fire is also at 0% containment, with 1,239 acres burned.

Authorities have issued an evacuation order for areas surrounding Green River Cove, where a smaller wildfire has burned 15 acres and is currently not contained. Officials strongly advise residents to stay out of evacuated areas and to respect the no-fly zones.

Polk County Government’s official statement noted that the Deep Woods Fire, located off Deep Woods Lane and Piney Gate Road, is under investigation for its cause. So far, one structure has been confirmed damaged, and two others have been lost in this area.

The Fish Hook Fire, situated in the Lake Adger area, has reported losses, with three houses lost and one structure damaged as of Friday evening. The fire control efforts face difficulties due to dry weather, steep terrain, and challenging wind conditions, according to North Carolina Forest Service.

The Black Cove Fire, originating near Green River Cove Road, has been particularly troublesome, with officials stating it remains uncontained. No injuries have been reported, but evacuations are under management from the Polk County Emergency Management.

Residents can seek shelter at 75 Carmel Lane in Columbus, NC, where the Polk County Shelter is set up to assist evacuees. The North Carolina Forest Service continues to navigate the evolving situation, alongside Polk County officials.

“As the wildfires continue to spread, it is crucial for residents to adhere to the evacuation orders and safety recommendations,” stated a spokesperson from Polk County Emergency Management.

The North Carolina emergency response includes a statewide burn ban, with authorities urging the public to remain vigilant. Similar restrictions apply in South Carolina amid rising wildfire risks.
