KATOWICE, Poland — The French basketball team secured a decisive victory against Iceland, winning 114-74 in their final group stage match of the Eurobasket on Thursday. The victory was characterized by a dominant performance from start to finish, with France taking a substantial lead by the end of the first quarter, 36-9.

Coach Frédéric Fauthoux was able to manage players’ time on the court effectively thanks to the large margin, allowing all of his players to contribute to the score. Eight French players scored in double digits during the game, highlighting the team’s offensive depth.

Towards the end of the first half, France led 66-34, solidifying their control over the match. The second half saw France maintain their lead, with outstanding contributions from players like Mam Jaiteh, who scored 13 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. The team’s effective shooting from beyond the arc, particularly with an impressive 12 of 31 threes overall, further exemplified their strong performance.

“We knew the importance of starting strong and maintaining our intensity throughout the match,” said Jaiteh. “We were focused on ending the group stage with a statement.”

As the match concluded, fans and players alike awaited the results from other matches in Group D to determine France’s opponent in the knockout phase. Depending on the outcomes later that day, France could secure a first, second, or third place finish, impacting their entry into the elimination rounds.

France will now transition to the knockout stage of the tournament, heading to Latvia for the next phase. The team has secured a respectable position with four wins out of five games, although they will miss key player Alexandre Sarr due to injury as they prepare for their upcoming challenges.
