Pittsburgh Winter School Delays 2025

Several school districts in the Pittsburgh area announced delays on Friday, January 10, 2025, as temperatures plummeted to single digits, creating hazardous conditions for morning commutes. The Albert Gallatin Area School District and Brownsville Area School District were among those implementing a two-hour delay to ensure student safety.

The National Weather Service reported temperatures as low as 6 degrees Fahrenheit in Pittsburgh, with wind chills making it feel like 3 degrees below zero. In nearby areas such as Monroeville and Franklin, temperatures felt even colder, reaching 2 degrees below zero. The frigid conditions prompted school administrators to prioritize safety, delaying start times to allow roads to be treated and temperatures to rise slightly.

“We want to make sure our students and staff can travel safely,” said a spokesperson for the Albert Gallatin Area School District. “The delay gives us time to assess road conditions and ensure our buses can operate without issue.”

In addition to school delays, a winter weather advisory was issued for Allegheny, Beaver, Westmoreland, Washington, Greene, and Fayette counties, with light snow showers expected to bring 1 to 3 inches of accumulation. The advisory, in effect from 7 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Sunday, warned of potentially slippery roads and reduced visibility during the evening commute.

Residents were advised to exercise caution, especially in higher elevations like the Laurel Highlands, where snow accumulation could be more significant. The cold snap is expected to persist through the weekend, with temperatures remaining in the low 30s and scattered flurries possible early next week.

For a full list of school closings and delays, residents were directed to local news outlets and school district websites.
