Lake Placid Garden Club Green Thumb Award

Lake Placid, NY – The Garden Club of Lake Placid celebrated the end of the gardening season by awarding the Green Thumb Award to four local homeowners for their impressive flower displays. This recognition highlights their dedication to beautifying the neighborhood.

Dorine and Ed Peregrim of Liberty Hill Lane, along with Jenifer Briggs of Church Street, Deborah Pelkey of Acorn Street, and Carol and Karl Scott of Grandview Avenue, received the awards during a small ceremony. Each awardee was given handcrafted copper garden markers and tulip bulbs to enhance their gardens further.

Many of these gardens extend beyond front yards, with vibrant displays containing various plant species. Some plants were gifted by friends, adding a personal touch to the colorful landscapes.

The Garden Club of Lake Placid has a rich history of improving community aesthetics, evolving from volunteer efforts to professional landscaping. The club continues to maintain important projects like the courtyard garden at Elderwood of Uihlein Assisted Living and the Triangle Garden near the North Elba Show Grounds.

This fall, the gardeners face new challenges with early frosts bringing temperatures down into the twenties. Proper cleanup is crucial for protecting plant health over the winter months. Gardeners must decide how much to trim foliage based on factors like wildlife needs and soil health.

For seasonal residents, thorough cleanup becomes essential to prevent rot from heavy materials before returning in the spring. Members of the Garden Club enjoyed a final trip to Whiteface Mountain this fall, taking in the stunning foliage.

Looking ahead, the club plans to create 100 holiday swags to brighten up the village for the winter season, continuing its tradition of community beautification.
