Gareth Southgate to Take Sabbatical from Coaching in 2024
Gareth Southgate, the former manager of the England national football team, has announced that he will not be returning to coaching duties for at least the next year. Southgate, who is 54 years old, recently ended his tenure as England manager following the team’s loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. “I won’t coach in the next year for sure, I’m certain of that,” Southgate stated during the European Club Association general assembly held in Athens, as reported by the BBC.
The former manager has decided to take a break after dedicating over a decade to football management, first with the England Under-21s and then the senior national team. “I need to give myself time to make good decisions. When you come out of a really big role, you need to give your body time, you need to give your mind time,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of rejuvenation.
Southgate has been linked speculatively with a position at Manchester United, where there is mounting pressure on their current manager, Erik ten Hag. His close relationship with Manchester United’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth, has fueled the speculation. Ashworth was the Football Association’s technical director when Southgate was appointed as England’s head coach in 2016.
Despite opportunities arising, Southgate has opted to enjoy a break. “I’m enjoying my life, so there’s no rush. I’m fortunate that there are lots of opportunities presenting themselves,” he expressed, signaling that while he might entertain future offers, they will not be entertained within the coming year.
