LOS ANGELES, CA — Gary Oldman‘s Academy Award-winning film ‘Darkest Hour‘ will be available for streaming on Paramount+ starting November 1. The 2018 historical drama centers on Winston Churchill during World War II and highlights his leadership at a crucial moment for Britain.

Oldman, known for his role as Sid Vicious in ‘Sid and Nancy‘ since 1986, finally received his first Oscar for Best Actor in ‘Darkest Hour.’ The film earned two Academy Awards out of six nominations, including Best Picture. Despite competition from notable performances in ‘Call Me by Your Name’ and ‘Roman J. Israel, Esq.’, Oldman’s representation of Churchill was praised for its depth and complexity.

‘Darkest Hour’ is directed by Joe Wright and features a screenplay by Anthony McCarten. The film begins with Churchill’s appointment as Prime Minister, following Neville Chamberlain. Faced with the imminent threat of Adolf Hitler, Churchill must decide between negotiating peace or continuing to fight an uphill battle against Germany. His determination ultimately rallies the nation during its darkest times.

Alongside Oldman, the film stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Lily James, and Ben Mendelsohn, contributing to its critical acclaim and a 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Oldman’s portrayal has been characterized as powerful and transformative, shedding light on the moral dilemmas faced by leaders in times of crisis.

Currently, Oldman is also featured in the Apple TV+ series ‘Slow Horses‘, which has been renewed for a fifth season due to its rising popularity. Meanwhile, director Wright has recently worked on the Sky Original series ‘Mussolini‘, focusing on the Italian dictator’s rise to power during the early 20th century.

‘Darkest Hour’ is set to make its streaming debut on Paramount+ and offers viewers a dramatic look into the complexities of wartime leadership. Stay updated with Collider for the latest news on streaming titles.
