Gas Main Rupture Injures Worker, Evacuates Brooklyn Block

BAY RIDGE, Brooklyn (WABC) — A gas main rupture in Brooklyn left one worker seriously injured and prompted officials to evacuate an entire block of homes on Thursday evening. The incident occurred at 160 86th St., between Colonial Road and Ridge Boulevard, around 5:45 p.m.
According to National Grid, their crews were performing repair work on a natural gas transmission main when the incident happened, resulting in the release of gas. The company stated that emergency responders and city agencies are working together at the scene.
The injured worker was transported to Lutheran Hospital for treatment. Thankfully, no additional injuries have been reported, according to the FDNY.
Emergency measures included the shutdown of gas in the area. National Grid reported that valves at either end of the affected section of the main have been closed, and the leak is now under control.
All residents on 86th Street between Colonial Road and Ridge Boulevard were evacuated as a precaution. National Grid and city officials continue to monitor the situation.
