Giants Defense Weakness Highlighted: Deonte Banks Under Fire
East Rutherford, New Jersey – The New York Giants’ defense faces criticism following recent performances, particularly aimed at cornerback Deonte Banks. An unnamed defensive coach revealed serious flaws, stating that opposing teams routinely exploit these weaknesses.
“They can’t tackle,” the coach commented, specifically mentioning Banks along with fellow cornerback Cor’Dale Flott, a third-round draft pick in 2022. This harsh assessment comes as the Giants prepare for their Week 17 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.
In a disappointing game against the Minnesota Vikings, Banks was taken out in the second half and replaced by rookie Korie Black due to his struggles in run defense. The Giants ultimately lost that game 16-13, highlighting their defensive vulnerabilities.
The coach further noted that “every team in the league runs crack-toss against them,” emphasizing the need for the Giants to shore up their defense. The upcoming game against the Raiders poses a significant challenge, as rookie star Ashton Jeanty has been particularly effective this season.
Notably, Banks has faced his share of issues this season, surrendering touchdowns and failing to make key tackles. He was benched earlier this season, reflecting a pattern of concerning play. Despite being a first-round pick in 2023, his performance has not met expectations.
Flott’s performance has mirrored Banks, raising further concerns about the team’s defensive line-up. The Giants have shown a lack of physicality up front, which has contributed to their inability to stop the run.
Analyst Carl Banks, a franchise great, highlighted the need for improvement on the defense during a podcast, criticizing Banks’ effort and execution. “If you were to stand on that field and watch pregame warmups,” he said, “you’d think he is a player. Lights come on, and he just plays whatever he wants.”
The Giants defense, filled with high-round draft picks, has underperformed, leading to calls for the team to bolster its lineup. As the offseason approaches, improving the defensive front may be crucial for New York’s future.
