Giants Make Moves Before Preseason Game

The New York Giants are shaking things up as they head into their second preseason game against the Houston Texans. They’ve made some big roster changes leading up to the 53-man roster deadline later this month.

In one notable move, the Giants traded veteran defensive lineman Jordan Phillips to the Dallas Cowboys. This trade also involves two draft picks for 2026, signaling a strategic shift as the team prepares for the upcoming season.

Along with the trade, the Giants welcomed new players, signing running back Joshua Kelley and safeties Raheem Layne and Jonathan Sutherland. This comes as they announced the release of defensive back Jalen Mills, who had been on the non-football injury list due to a calf issue. They also placed defensive back Elijah Riley on injured reserve.

Joshua Kelley, standing 5’11” and weighing 212 pounds, brings valuable experience after spending four seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers. He’s put up solid numbers, totaling over 1,100 rushing yards and six touchdowns during his time there.

Raheem Layne, also 5’11 adds depth to the safety position. He spent some time with the Chargers too but had to deal with a torn ACL last season, putting his ability to bounce back in focus as he joins the Giants.

On the other hand, Jonathan Sutherland will be looking to make his mark in the NFL after signing with the Giants. He previously played at Penn State but hasn’t yet stepped onto the field as a pro.

With the Giants needing to finalize their 53-man roster by 4 PM ET on August 27, these moves definitely reflect their strategy to build a competitive team this season.
