Giants Name McAtamney Starting Kicker Against Chargers
East Rutherford, New Jersey — The New York Giants have named second-year kicker Jude McAtamney as their starter for the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Chargers, following the injury of veteran kicker Graham Gano.
Gano was placed on injured reserve on Saturday due to a groin injury he suffered before last week’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs. This marks the third consecutive season Gano will be sidelined due to injuries.
“It’s a tough loss for us, but we’re excited for Jude to step in,” said Giants head coach Brian Daboll. McAtamney, who has spent time on the Giants’ practice squad, previously played at Rutgers. He kicked in one game last season, successfully converting a 31-yard field goal and an extra point.
Younghoe Koo, a former Pro Bowl kicker, was signed earlier this week but lost the competition to McAtamney. The Giants decided to elevate McAtamney from the practice squad instead of making him compete with Koo for a spot on the active roster.
“It was a close competition, but we see potential in Jude,” Daboll noted.
In addition to Gano’s injury, running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. will also miss the game with a shoulder injury, leaving the Giants thin at the position. The team will rely on Cam Skattebo and Devin Singletary for running duties.
The Giants are still holding out hope for defensive lineman Rakeem Nunez-Roches to play, despite being listed as doubtful with a foot injury.
“We know we have some challenges ahead of us, but our players have stepped up before,” Daboll said. McAtamney will have the opportunity to prove himself Sunday as he takes on kicking duties in a crucial matchup against the Chargers.
