HOLLYWOOD, CA — Filmmakers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are set to write, produce, and direct a new original film in the Star Trek universe. This announcement comes as the franchise looks to breathe new life after nearly a decade without a big screen venture. The two are producing the project under their GoldDay banner.

Sources indicate that this upcoming Star Trek film will take a completely fresh approach, distinct from any previous movies or television series. Skydance founder David Ellison hinted during a recent earnings call that the next installment would feature new actors and storylines, steering clear of continuations from the Chris Pine-led series.

While plot specifics remain undisclosed, insiders suggest that new characters are likely to play prominent roles in the film. Goldstein and Daley, known for their innovative takes on popular franchises, previously made their mark with films such as Spider-Man: Homecoming and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

These films received positive feedback for their engaging stories and humor, with Dungeons & Dragons scoring 91% from critics and 92% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Their strong ties to Paramount and Skydance, along with the successful Mayday starring Ryan Reynolds, have positioned them as key players in revitalizing the Star Trek brand.

The Star Trek franchise has struggled to find its footing after the release of Star Trek Beyond in 2016, which grossed $343.4 million globally but did not meet expectations. Several projects have attempted to launch since, including an R-rated film from Quentin Tarantino, but none have advanced to production. The collaborative path forward between film and TV for Star Trek is a new direction for Paramount and Skydance.

“We want to make sure these conversations are happening together to do what’s best for the brand as a whole,” said Dana Goldberg, co-chair of Skydance.

Goldstein and Daley, represented by CAA and Fourth Wall Management, are poised to embark on this new journey with Star Trek, focusing on a vision that diverges from earlier incarnations.
