Good Friday Cross Walk Draws Attention in Greenville

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Residents and travelers in Greenville and Pitt County witnessed a unique sight this Good Friday, as members of Reedy Branch Church participated in a cross walk along the highway to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
This annual event, now in its second year, involved multiple groups walking with the cross, taking turns carrying it for short distances. Participants aimed to share their message and spread the gospel of Jesus’ sacrifice.
Levi Smith, a member of the church, explained, “So we are just here on the road carrying a cross for a short distance, minus the pain and torment that he went through.” He added that the team welcomed interactions from passing cars, sharing waves and inviting onlookers to stop and engage in conversation about their faith.
The event aligns with the Christian observance of Good Friday, which marks the day Jesus was crucified, occurring annually on the Friday before Easter Sunday. The cross walk serves not only as a visual representation of faith but also as a reminder of the significance of the day for many Christians.
Meanwhile, in a different realm of local news, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced an extension of the tax filing deadline to May 1 for most taxpayers due to Hurricane Helene. This extension applies to individuals filing Form 1040 and those operating businesses across North Carolina.
The IRS typically sets the tax deadline for April 15, but the recent natural disaster prompted this adjustment. The North Carolina Department of Revenue had already pushed its deadline to correspond with the IRS’s new date; however, further changes from the state have yet to be confirmed.
