Greggs Fenwick Champagne Bar

The well-known British bakery chain Greggs is set to open a unique pop-up Champagne bar in Newcastle’s Fenwick food hall for the Christmas season. This innovative concept will see Greggs’ famous bakes paired with high-end Champagne, offering a distinctive dining experience.

The exclusive “reservation-only” bar, described as “inspired by 1920s Paris wine bars,” will open next week and remain until December 31. It will accommodate 16 guests in a chic setting, where they can enjoy a glass of Louis Roederer Cristal priced at £75, among other selections from the high-end Champagne menu.

Greggs, headquartered in Newcastle, aims to combine its “iconic savoury menu of bakes and rolls” with prestigious Champagnes such as Bollinger and Laurent Perrier. Despite the luxury beverages, the food remains affordably priced, with main dishes under £5, staying true to Greggs’ ethos.

The menu, crafted by Fenwick’s executive head chef Mark Reid, features classic Greggs dishes like sausage rolls and steak bakes, enhanced with gourmet accompaniments. Sausage rolls are served with a hot honey chili sauce, while the steak bake comes with a creamy peppercorn aioli.

Leo Fenwick, the strategic partnerships director at Fenwick, commented on the collaboration, expressing excitement about reuniting two iconic North East brands for a “fun and truly unique customer experience.”

This venture follows a previous successful pop-up last Christmas, which hosted over 8,000 diners, and is part of Greggs’ recent series of marketing stunts that include limited-edition fashion collaborations and jewellery lines.

The initiative underscores Greggs’ successful market expansion strategy amid increasing demand during the cost-of-living crisis. The bakery chain, known for its sausage rolls and bakes, continues to diversify its offerings, including takeaway pizzas, while extending store hours to compete with more expensive competitors.
