Most Grocery Stores to Remain Open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2025
AUSTIN, Texas — As the nation prepares to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, most grocery stores across the U.S. will remain open, offering shoppers the chance to stock up on essentials despite the federal holiday. While federal and state offices, banks, and postal services will close, supermarkets are expected to operate under regular hours.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day, celebrated on the third Monday of January each year, honors the life and legacy of the civil rights leader. This year, the holiday coincides with a three-day weekend for many, providing an opportunity for errands or dining out. However, shoppers are advised to confirm operating hours with their local stores, as some locations may adjust schedules.
Major grocery chains, including Walmart, Kroger, and Publix, are expected to maintain normal hours. “Most grocery stores will operate during normal hours on Martin Luther King Jr. Day,” a spokesperson for a national retail association confirmed. Restaurants, too, are likely to remain open, though patrons should verify hours with individual establishments.
In contrast, federal services will be largely unavailable. The U.S. Postal Service will suspend regular mail delivery, with only priority mail services operational. Banks and stock markets, including the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ, will also close for the holiday, resuming operations on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Delivery services will see mixed availability. While UPS pickup and delivery services will be limited, FedEx will offer modified services with open locations. Amazon has announced it will not deliver packages on Jan. 20, resuming operations the following day.
As Americans reflect on Dr. King’s contributions, the holiday serves as a reminder of his enduring impact on civil rights and social justice. For those planning to shop or dine out, the day offers a chance to support local businesses while honoring the legacy of a transformative leader.
