Millions of Indians are in the spirit of celebration as Gudi Padwa 2024, also known as Ugadi, Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, or Cheti Chand, approaches. This traditional Hindu festival, observed on the first day of the Hindu month of Chaitra, holds great significance as it symbolizes new beginnings, prosperity, and the triumph of good over evil.

Gudi Padwa, celebrated widely in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, features the traditional hoisting of a Gudi, which is a flag or cloth adorned with flowers, neem leaves, and a kalash (pot). The Gudi signifies victory and auspiciousness, and families come together to partake in various rituals and traditions that bind them closer.

The auspicious Pratipada Tithi for Gudi Padwa 2024, as per Drik Panchang, begins at 23:50 PM on April 8 and concludes at 20:30 PM on April 9. This transitional moment marks the start of the Samvatsara, a cycle of sixty years, ushering in hope, prosperity, and opportunities for the year ahead.

During Gudi Padwa, families prepare traditional sweets like Puran Poli and Shrikhand, don vibrant traditional attire, and craft rangolis outside their homes, adding to the festive cheer. The hoisting of the Gudi outside homes is believed to dispel evil forces and invite blessings of prosperity and joy into the household.

Gudi Padwa not only signifies the initiation of the New Year but also celebrates the victory of righteousness over evil, epitomized by Lord Rama‘s triumph over Ravana. Families exchange warm greetings and gifts, further spreading joy and happiness in their communities.

Signifying the onset of spring and the essence of tradition, Gudi Padwa remains a cherished festival that unites families and communities in the spirit of hope and positivity.
