Gulf Coast Faces Heavy Rain Chances This Mother’s Day Weekend

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – An area of low pressure is set to bring significant rain to the Gulf Coast this Mother’s Day weekend. As the region faces ongoing drought conditions, the forecast shows a mixture of showers and thunderstorms from Saturday through Monday.
Chief Meteorologist Allen Strum explained that the placement and shape of the low pressure system will impact where heavy rain will occur. According to the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather is in effect for parts of the Southeast on Friday, with that risk expanding into the Big Bend and Jacksonville area by Saturday.
The chances for rain will increase significantly, especially in inland regions. Showers are expected to develop late Saturday afternoon into the evening, with temperatures reaching the low 90s. However, humidity levels will make it feel hotter, potentially reaching the upper 90s.
On Sunday, the Mother’s Day forecast indicates a cloudy day with a 50% chance of scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. The risk of heavy rain persists as the low pressure moves toward the northern Gulf. High temperatures will remain in the low to mid-80s.
Rainfall totals could range from 1 to 3 inches across affected areas, which is crucial as the region has been experiencing a moderate drought. While scattered storms are expected through the weekend, a more widespread coverage of rain is predicted on Monday, with the storm system continuing into Tuesday.
Residents are advised to stay hydrated and be prepared for wet weather as the holiday approaches. The conditions will also provide relief to the ongoing drought, with predictions indicating 3-6 inches of total rainfall by midweek.
