Gusty Winds Lead to Ferry Cancellations in Greater Victoria and the Gulf Islands
High wind speeds in the Strait of Georgia caused disruptions in ferry travel between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay on Wednesday. B.C. Ferries announced the cancellation of the 10 a.m. and noon sailings due to strong gusts, with additional sailings potentially at risk.
The wind warning issued by Environment Canada specifically targeted Greater Victoria and the southern Gulf Islands, where gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour near water were anticipated. This prompted concerns of power outages and falling tree branches in the area.
Passengers were advised to consider using the Tsawwassen-Duke Point route as an alternative if further cancellations occurred. Thankfully, as conditions improved, the potential cancellation of the 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. sailings was averted.
The weather office highlighted the risk of damage to buildings, loose objects being tossed, and potential injury due to the high winds. Despite the challenges, the situation gradually eased throughout the day, providing some relief for travelers in the region.
