LOS ANGELES, CA — Gypsy Rose Blanchard is opening up about her journey in couples therapy with partner Ken Urker as they navigate parenthood together. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the couple shared insights from their relationship after welcoming their daughter, Aurora, on December 28, 2024.

Blanchard, 33, explained how therapy has been beneficial. “I like it because it gives an unbiased opinion,” she stated. “You don’t want to go to your family all the time to talk about the bad stuff.”

She emphasized that having an impartial third party helps them understand each other’s perspectives. “They can see my side, they can see his side and give us an honest opinion about where we should go and how we could improve,” she added.

The couple’s relationship has had its ups and downs since their first connection while Blanchard was incarcerated for her involvement in the murder of her mother in 2016. Despite their complex past, Blanchard affirmed her commitment to Urker, saying, “Absolutely,” when asked if she sees a future with him.

“I mean, you get to know someone a lot better,” Blanchard noted, reflecting on how their relationship has matured since they first met. “We were in our mid-twenties, so we grew up. Learning each other is almost like dating a new partner, but then it’s the old partner too.”

The couple began communicating as pen pals after Urker watched the HBO documentary “Mommy Dead and Dearest.” They got engaged in 2018 but parted ways before ultimately reconnecting. Blanchard’s recent divorce from her estranged husband, Ryan Anderson, has made their relationship stronger, as they now focus on their family.

Blanchard shared her hopes for the future: “I really just hope we continue to have open communication. I think it would be wonderful for us to bring those walls down and be the most vulnerable that we’ve ever been with each other.”

In the months since becoming parents, Blanchard expressed joy in watching their daughter grow. “She’s meeting those milestones perfectly. She’s starting to smile. She’s starting to show us who she is,” she said.

Urker added that the couple never doubted paternity during their pregnancy. “We did the paternity test early… but we knew all along what the results were gonna be,” he stated. Both partners are committed to fostering a supportive environment for Aurora.

As they prepare for the challenges of parenthood, Blanchard reflected on how her traumatic childhood shapes her parenting choices. “I realize how much I want to give her, how much happiness I want to give her,” she explained, highlighting the importance of learning from her mother’s mistakes.

The couple is aware of the eventual need to address Blanchard’s past with their daughter. “We have a plan,” Urker shared. “We’re gonna navigate that as a family.”

Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Ken Urker star in the new season of “Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up,” which premieres March 10 at 9 p.m. ET on Lifetime.
