HBO Unveils Official Trailer for ‘Dune: Prophecy’ at New York Comic Con
HBO has officially released the trailer for its highly anticipated prequel series, ‘Dune: Prophecy,’ during a panel at the New York Comic Con. The series, set to premiere on November 17, serves as a precursor to the popular “Dune” films directed by Denis Villeneuve.
Set 10,000 years before the events of Villeneuve’s movies, ‘Dune: Prophecy’ delves into the origins of the Bene Gesserit, the mysterious sisterhood integral to Frank Herbert‘s iconic sci-fi novels. The series focuses on two Harkonnen sisters who confront threats to human survival while establishing the legendary sect.
The cast features Emily Watson as Valya Harkonnen, described as a formidable leader of the sisterhood who aims to “advance our species and govern the future.” Olivia Williams co-stars as Tula Harkonnen. The trailer showcases sweeping alien landscapes and intricate interiors, setting the tone for an epic narrative.
Mark Strong plays Emperor Javicco Corrino, who expresses concern over maintaining control of the desert planet Arrakis, crucial for its spice, a substance essential to intergalactic travel. Travis Fimmel appears as Desmond Hart, a potential rival to the sisters and their ambitions.
The series, which has been in development for five years, has faced multiple casting, writing, and directing changes amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and industry strikes. Alison Schapker serves as the showrunner, with executive producers including Diane Ademu-John and Anna Foerster.
Additional cast members include Jodhi May, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Shalom Brune-Franklin, and a host of others, all contributing to a complex storyline that explores the intricacies of power, survival, and destiny within the ‘Dune’ universe.
The release of ‘Dune: Prophecy’ follows the success of Legendary‘s two “Dune” movies, which have collectively grossed over $1.1 billion globally. A third installment is reportedly in the works, marking continued interest and investment in Herbert’s sci-fi epic.
