Sonoma County Heat Wave

SONOMA, California — A surge of heat is forecast to arrive in Sonoma and Napa counties by Friday, bringing temperatures close to triple digits. The National Weather Service has issued safety warnings as the region braces for moderate heat risks and increased fire danger this weekend.

Forecasters predict that inland areas of Sonoma County, particularly Santa Rosa, could reach highs of about 94 degrees on Friday, with overnight lows in the mid-50s. In Napa County, cities such as Calistoga and St. Helena may see temperatures climb to 97 degrees, with lows in the mid- to high-50s.

According to meteorologist Nicole Sarment with the National Weather Service, the heat is driven by rising high pressure over the area, resulting in dry and warm conditions for Friday and Saturday. With light winds expected, low humidity and dry grass, especially in the eastern hills of Napa County and northern Sonoma County, create an elevated risk of wildfires.

“Always practice fire safety,” Sarment advised. “Don’t drive over vegetation or park over it. Extinguish any cigarettes. Just be smart around any potential ignition source.”

The National Weather Service has classified the upcoming heat as a moderate risk. While it may be tolerable for those acclimated to heat, it poses health risks to children, older adults, outdoor workers, and those without proper shelter. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and check on vulnerable neighbors.

In related news, beachgoers in the Bay Area are advised to remain cautious as they enjoy the warm weather this Memorial Day weekend. San Francisco’s Ocean Beach, known for its dangerous conditions, could see increased crowds with families looking to relax.

“When in doubt, don’t go out,” San Francisco Fire Department Lieutenant Mariano Elias warned, urging swimmers to be aware of rip currents.

As temperatures rise, officials encourage residents to take precautions and prepare for the hottest days ahead.
