Heavy Rain Causes Widespread Flooding in Benue State
A severe downpour in Benue State has resulted in significant flooding, displacing numerous residents and causing substantial damage. The heavy rain, which began in the early hours of Monday and lasted until noon, inundated several areas within the capital city of Makurdi.
The flooding has left residents struggling to cope with the aftermath, as homes and businesses were submerged under water. The situation has been exacerbated by the overflow from nearby water bodies and tributaries, which are swollen due to the ongoing rainy season.
The Benue State government and emergency services are working to mitigate the effects of the flood, but the scale of the disaster is substantial. Similar flooding incidents have been reported in other parts of Nigeria, highlighting the country’s vulnerability to flood disasters during the May-to-November rainy season.
The current flooding in Benue is part of a broader pattern of severe weather events affecting various regions of Nigeria. In Kogi State, for instance, over 200 communities have been submerged, and nearly two million people have been displaced due to flooding.
