New Mexico High Winds Fire Weather Alert

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Strong winds reaching up to 60 mph are expected across New Mexico on Sunday, raising fire danger levels throughout the state.

The National Weather Service issued red flag warnings as low humidity and high winds create critical fire weather conditions. These warnings indicate a serious risk for the spread of wildfires.

Wind gusts may reach 60 mph by the afternoon in certain areas, and blowing dust could reduce visibility to less than a half mile, especially in regions that received little rainfall.

In addition to the wind threat, some areas face a minor risk of flash flooding after substantial rain fell Saturday night. Scattered showers and potential snowfall are likely in northern and eastern New Mexico beginning Tuesday, according to forecasters.

Alan Shoemaker, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, elaborated on the forecast, emphasizing the need for caution given the combination of wind and dry conditions.

Weather conditions in New Mexico on Sunday will remain closely monitored as the potential for increased fire activity continues. Residents are urged to be vigilant and prepared.
