Unley Home With Historic Significance And Celebrity History

Unley, Australia — A spacious home at 50 Hughes Street is on the market, featuring a rich history and numerous modern renovations. The vendors, Nicole and Karl, purchased the property in 2014, having always admired its stunning Queen Anne architecture during their neighborhood walks.

“It was the exterior and just how beautiful the outside was that got us interested in the home,” Nicole said. Originally a four-bedroom house, the couple completed a sympathetic renovation, adding a granite-topped kitchen and creating open-plan living spaces.

A proud part of the home’s character is its iconic turret and intricate pressed tin ceiling, a nod to its origins as a residence for a decorated ship’s captain built in the early 1900s. The home once served as boarding accommodation and is notably the former residence of Academy Award-winning actor Mel Gibson.

Nicole explained that Gibson’s connection to the property stemmed from his first wife, Robyn Moore, being from Adelaide. Although Gibson owned the home for a brief period, he is an integral part of its history, having lived there when he was filming in the late 1980s.

The home features multiple living areas and a large outdoor deck, providing ample space for family gatherings and activities. Nicole mentioned the enjoyment her family, including three young boys, has found in the expansive gardens. “We’ve had my husband’s 40th birthday and my birthday out the back with drinks under that tree,” she said, referring to a decades-old elm tree that serves as a gathering point for family celebrations.

Having made many cherished memories in the home, the family is now looking to move closer to their children’s school. Nicole hopes that another family will appreciate the idyllic surroundings, conveniently located near King William Road and the city. The property is currently listed with Williams Real Estate, with offers closing on May 13.
