Hoda Kotb, long-time anchor of NBC‘s ‘Today‘ show, announced her decision to leave the program, marking the end of a significant chapter in her broadcasting career. Known for her warmth and candidness on screen, Kotb has become a beloved figure in American households. Her announcement comes after nearly two decades with the network and a particular emphasis on the evolving personal priorities in her life.

In a reflective statement, Kotb, who turned 60 this year, explained her motivation for the departure, citing a desire for change and a new perspective on life’s next chapter. “I’ve been contemplating what I want this next chunk of my life to look like,” Kotb said, emphasizing the importance of balancing her professional responsibilities with personal commitments.

The decision follows a year filled with personal challenges, notably concerning the health of her daughter, Hope. In early 2023, Hope experienced a sudden medical issue that placed immense pressure on the family. Though Kotb did not disclose specific details regarding her daughter’s condition, she reassured that Hope is currently thriving under excellent care.

Her journey has prompted Kotb to reassess her priorities, leading her to conclude that excelling in personal life often means making sacrifices in one’s professional sphere. “There’s a guilt you carry because you can’t be 100% at work and 100% at home. Something has to give,” Kotb explained during an interview.

Co-anchor Jenna Bush Hager made light of Kotb’s announcement by referencing a humorous nickname, “Hodini,” which reflects Kotb’s habit of exiting social gatherings early. Bush Hager described how this nickname humorously encapsulates Kotb’s decision to leave the program at a pivotal moment.

As Kotb looks forward to more quality time with her daughters, Hailey and Hope, she expressed excitement about this newfound chapter, which includes everyday experiences like school runs. Her departure from the ‘Today’ show is scheduled for early next year, allowing her to transition into this new phase smoothly.

Kotb’s departure leaves a notable vacancy in the ‘Today’ lineup, widely regarded as one of the best seats in television. She leaves future anchors with advice to remain authentic and enjoy the dynamics of working alongside co-hosts.
