Honda Recalls 406,290 Civics Over Faulty Wheels
WASHINGTON — Honda is recalling 406,290 Civic vehicles due to a manufacturing defect that may cause the wheels to detach, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall affects Civics from model years 2016 to 2021, according to a notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Nov. 6.
The issue involves accessory aluminum wheels that may not have the correct steel bolt seat, leading to potential loosening of the lug nuts. This defect could result in the wheels coming off while driving. Honda has stated that they expect only a very small number of vehicles will require a wheel replacement.
Honda dealers will inspect the wheels of the recalled vehicles and will replace any necessary components at no cost to the owners. Notification letters for affected vehicle owners are scheduled to be mailed on Dec. 9, 2025. Owners can reach out to Honda’s customer service at 1-888-234-2138 for more information.
The defect was traced back to a supply issue in Italy, where a barrier separating finished products from unfinished ones was inadvertently removed during equipment installation. This resulted in unfinished parts being mistakenly included in the shipment of finished products. Although Honda has not received any reports of crashes or injuries related to this issue, they are taking precautionary measures by recalling all potentially affected vehicles.
The company estimates that around 0.1 percent of the recalled vehicles, approximately 400 cars in the U.S., may actually have the defect. The recall underscores the growing concern about safety issues in the automotive industry, which has seen record numbers this year. As of November 2025, automakers have issued recalls affecting 25.8 million vehicles in total.
