Horror Film ‘Vicious’ Explores a Sinister Mystery Box

LOS ANGELES, CA — The latest horror film, ‘Vicious,’ directed by Bryan Bertino, dives into the unsettling world of a mysterious box that brings chaos to its owner. Released on October 10, 2025, the film stars Dakota Fanning as Polly, a troubled young woman facing an ominous fate.
The opening scenes reveal Polly as she anxiously navigates her large, messy house. She struggles with her life choices as she prepares for an important interview. Amid her turmoil, an elderly woman, played by Kathryn Hunter, arrives at her door on a cold winter night. Inviting the stranger in proves to be a grave mistake.
After exchanging small talk, the old woman reveals her sinister agenda. “I’m going to start now,” she announces, unveiling a wooden box and an hourglass. “You’re going to die tonight,” she ominously warns Polly, adding that Polly can escape her fate by filling the box with three specific items: something she hates, something she needs, and something she loves.
With her young niece’s life at stake, Polly seeks help from family and friends, including her mother and older sister. As the night unfolds, horror ensues with graphic scenes of self-mutilation and terrifying encounters, maintaining viewers’ adrenaline as Fanning delivers a compelling performance.
Bertino, known for his work in the horror genre, uses sound design and jump scares effectively to create a chilling atmosphere. Although praised for the film’s aesthetics and Fanning’s performance, some critics note that the plot lacks cohesion. The film consists of several tense moments but feels disconnected overall.
Despite these criticisms, ‘Vicious’ is seen as a bold exploration of fear and desperation, reminiscent of classic horror films. As the story reaches its climax, viewers are left questioning the meaning of the psychological horror they have witnessed.
The film is now streaming exclusively on Paramount+.
