House Explosion Hospitalizes Two in Southgate Early Morning Incident

SOUTHGATE, Mich. — Two individuals were hospitalized following a house explosion early Monday morning in Southgate, approximately at 5:45 a.m. The incident occurred at a residence located on Edison Street, where only two people were present at the time: a 37-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man.
Detective Sergeant Nathan Moscynski confirmed that both victims are receiving treatment for burns. The woman suffered a leg fracture after being trapped under debris from the explosion. Emergency responders successfully rescued her from the wreckage, while the man was reportedly ejected from the house due to the force of the blast.
The explosion also caused furniture, including a couch, to be propelled into a neighboring house. “This is monumental,” Moscynski stated. “(First responders) went to work and pulled people into safety and ultimately did their job.”
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Fire officials are advising residents to avoid the area as cleanup operations progress. “When I woke up, I heard the boom,” recalled Ricardo, a neighbor. “I panicked because I do care for that lady… It’s my neighbor, I do care for them.”
Fire crews from neighboring communities, including Wyandotte, Lincoln Park, and Trenton, assisted in response efforts at the scene. Further information will be disclosed as the investigation continues.
