Houthi Missile Attack On Ben Gurion Airport

Tel Aviv, Israel – A missile fired by Yemen’s Houthi forces struck near Ben Gurion Airport on Sunday, May 4, 2025, causing panic among travelers and temporarily halting air and ground traffic. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack, directly linking it to Iran.

The missile landed in open ground within the airport’s perimeter, sending a plume of smoke into the air. Four individuals sustained light injuries amid the chaos. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of panic as air raid sirens sounded across the region, prompting passengers to flee for safety.

“Attacks by the Houthis emanate from Iran,” Netanyahu tweeted. He promised that Israel would respond decisively to this incident, saying, “We will respond to the Houthi attack against our main airport at a time and place of our choosing.” The Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with defense officials later today to discuss Israel’s response.

Houthi military spokesperson Brigadier General Yahya Saree confirmed the missile was a hypersonic ballistic missile aimed at the airport, claiming it made the site “no longer safe for air travel.” Israel’s military reported that their interception attempts had failed to prevent the missile strike.

International carriers, including Lufthansa, Air France, and Delta, have canceled flights to and from Tel Aviv for several days following the incident. Commuter traffic was also disrupted but resumed about an hour after the missile impacted.

The attack occurred just hours before Israeli ministers were set to vote on increasing military operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. This escalation highlights ongoing tensions in the region, particularly since the outbreak of violence between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, 2023.

Netanyahu’s remarks were echoed by Israel’s Defense Minister, who stated, “Anyone who hits us, we will hit them seven times stronger.” This indicates a potential for a strong military response against the Houthis and their backers.

In recent months, the Houthis have intensified their missile strikes against Israel, asserting solidarity with the Palestinian cause amidst the ongoing conflict. While most missiles have been intercepted, this incident underscores a significant breach in Israel’s air defense systems.

As the situation develops, residents and travelers are advised to stay updated on safety protocols at the airport and throughout Tel Aviv.
