HUD Secretary Visits North Carolina to Meet Hurricane Helene Recovery Efforts

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner visited communities affected by Hurricane Helene on March 11, meeting with local leaders and residents to discuss ongoing rebuilding efforts.
During his visit, Secretary Turner met with representatives from the faith-based organization Samaritan’s Purse and community members impacted by the hurricane. The purpose of the visit was to witness firsthand the recovery efforts and provide support to those affected.
“It was an honor to welcome Secretary Turner to Asheville as he met with families and community leaders,” said Jason Kimak, Senior Director of North American Ministries at Samaritan’s Purse. “Visits like this remind families that they are not alone in this recovery.”
Secretary Turner sat down with storm survivors including Thanh Bui, a child nutritionist whose home suffered catastrophic flooding. Bui described the moment the floodwaters surged into her home. “The water started coming through the front door, and it was coming in fast. We had to swim out,” she said.
Networking with college students from Gardner-Webb University who volunteered during their spring break, Turner expressed gratitude for their commitment to helping rebuild homes. “Thank you for setting an example of what selflessness looks like,” he told the students.
As part of the visit, Secretary Turner participated in a roundtable discussion at GracePoint Church, highlighting the role of local churches and nonprofits in disaster recovery. “When the church steps up and does what it’s supposed to do, great things happen,” he said.
Atea Foster, another homeowner impacted by Hurricane Helene, shared her experience, stating, “If it wasn’t for Samaritan’s Purse and my family, I don’t think I would be here today.” Turner encouraged her during the visit, reinforcing the message of hope and community support.
Turner emphasized that HUD stands ready to direct funding assistance to impacted communities. “HUD looks forward to helping thousands of North Carolinians rebuild after Hurricane Helene,” he said, reiterating the department’s commitment to support recovery efforts.
Following the visit, Secretary Turner also addressed the ongoing discussions regarding Asheville’s draft action plan for disaster recovery funding, which requires revisions to meet HUD guidelines. Turner stated the importance of equitable access to resources for all affected residents during this critical recovery period.
