Hundreds Line Up for Free Gas in Des Moines’ Annual Fueling Hope Giveaway
DES MOINES, Iowa — Hundreds of people lined up for free gas on Sunday as part of the annual Fueling Hope giveaway, a tradition started by the Rev. Rob Johnson in 2022 to celebrate his birthday. The event, held at the Kwik Star on Northeast 14th Street, saw dozens of cars arrive within minutes of the noon announcement.
“We’ve gone from $5,000 the first year to now $30,000 in the fourth year,” Johnson said, highlighting the growth in donations and community support. The initiative, which began as a small act of kindness, has expanded significantly, with over 100 volunteers participating this year.
Among the volunteers was Rosie Thierer, a familiar face at the event. “This is an important thing to do. A community is only as strong as the people that are willing to give to one another and support one another,” Thierer said while assisting at Pump 15.
Despite freezing temperatures, volunteers wore beanies and gloves, ready to help. Johnson credited his upbringing for his commitment to giving back. “It’s a thing that was instilled in me from my mom. My mom was a giver. My family are givers,” he said.
The Fueling Hope initiative is set to expand beyond Iowa, with Johnson planning to bring the concept to St. Louis in May. The event, supported by sponsors like Molina Healthcare of Iowa and the Iowa Public Health Association, aims to alleviate financial burdens for families and foster community spirit.
“The Fueling Hope Annual Gas Giveaway is more than just an event — it’s a reminder of the power of community and compassion,” Johnson said in a statement. The giveaway has become a symbol of hope and generosity, drawing both new and returning participants each year.
