LOS ANGELES, CA — Hunter Schafer, a 26-year-old transgender actress known for her role in HBO’s ‘Euphoria,’ has spoken out after receiving a new passport that identifies her as male, despite her application indicating female. Schafer’s situation highlights the implications of recent executive orders signed by former President Donald Trump, which mandate that federal documents reflect biological sex rather than gender identity.

Schafer detailed her experience in an eight-minute TikTok video, where she expressed shock upon discovering the gender marker change after applying for a new passport. ‘I marked myself female on the application, and when I opened it, it read male,’ she said. ‘I didn’t think it was actually going to happen.’

The actress had previously held passports and identification documents that recognized her gender identity, which she transitioned to as a teenager. Her frustration stems not only from the error but also from the broader implications of the new policy initiated by Trump on his first day in office, stating that official documents must recognize only two sexes based on immutable biological characteristics.

In her video, Schafer emphasized that her gender identity remains unchanged despite the male marker on her passport. ‘Trans people are beautiful. We are never going to stop existing. I’m never gonna stop being trans,’ she stated firmly. ‘A letter and a passport can’t change that.’

The executive order, described as ‘Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth,’ has sparked considerable controversy. Following its implementation, the U.S. State Department ceased issuing passports with the ‘X’ gender marker, which had been available to cater to non-binary and gender non-conforming individuals since 2021.

Schafer, who lost her original passport while filming overseas, sought a replacement in Los Angeles, only to find the new passport did not reflect her self-identified gender. ‘We’re coming up on a decade now since I changed my gender marker, and I do believe this is a direct result of the administration’s current policies,’ she said, expressing her concerns about having to navigate potential complications while traveling abroad.

Legal advocates have voiced their discontent as well, noting that the American Civil Liberties Union has received complaints from numerous transgender individuals regarding the inability to secure documents that accurately reflect their gender identity. ‘We’ve been contacted by over 1,500 individuals and families who fear they might not obtain passports that rightfully depict their identities,’ the ACLU stated.

As Schafer prepares for her international trip, she remains anxious about the practical challenges she may face with border control officials. ‘I’m pretty sure it’s going to come along with having to out myself to border patrol agents much more often than I would like to,’ she lamented. ‘This is just my personal circumstance, but it affects so many others as well.’

Ultimately, Schafer’s message serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggles and resilience within the transgender community. ‘This is real, and it’s happening,’ she concluded. ‘I just felt it was important to share.’
