Hurricane Milton Approaches Florida Gulf Coast with Potentially Devastating Impact
ESPN’s Jeff Darlington has publicly shared a personal connection to Sarasota and its iconic Siesta Key beach as Hurricane Milton threatens the Florida Gulf Coast. The storm, classified as a Category 3 hurricane, is expected to deliver high winds and a storm surge over 15 feet, potentially causing catastrophic damage to regions still recovering from the recent Hurricane Helene.
According to weather forecasts, Sarasota, Florida, may bear the brunt of the storm. The area’s barrier islands, including the renowned Siesta Key, famous for its pristine white sands, stand particularly vulnerable. Darlington took to social media to share his family’s decades-long history with Siesta Key, including how his grandfather used his life savings to purchase a small apartment there in 1979. “And so began my family’s connection with Florida,” he penned, reflecting on fond memories from the region.
“My grandparents loved living there among the tourists, walking miles of crystal white sands each day,” Darlington recounted, noting that his family continues to gather annually at the property. He expressed concern over the future of the area as Hurricane Milton advances, urging support for locals. “Please keep the locals and the beaches in your thoughts,” he added, fondly recommending Siesta Key as an essential visit post-recovery.
Current reports from Sarasota reveal a tense atmosphere as residents face looming evacuations. Emergency services have been active across the county, assisting residents with preparations ahead of Milton’s landfall. “This will be a knockout. Buildings, homes, wiped off foundations. That is unsurvivable,” an emergency worker described to ABC News as they facilitated evacuations.
Darlington concluded his thoughts, reassuring followers of his safety from Fort Lauderdale while expressing his concerns for those remaining on the Gulf Coast. “I’m perfectly safe in Fort Lauderdale, but my heart and my mind remain with my family on the gulf coast… and in Siesta Key,” he wrote.
