Sing Thriller Animated Film

The highly anticipated return of the animated film franchise “Sing” is set to coincide with the Halloween season, showcasing “Sing: Thriller” on the streaming platform Netflix this Wednesday. This short film adaptation, produced by Illumination Entertainment, reimagines Michael Jackson’s iconic “Thriller” music video, originally penned by Rod Temperton, as a thrilling Halloween musical spectacular.

Directed by Garth Jennings, who previously directed the “Sing” films, the short film will see the return of original cast members such as Matthew McConaughey as Buster Moon, Tori Kelly as Meena, Nick Kroll as Gunter, Scarlett Johansson as Ash, and Taron Egerton as Johnny. Set in the vibrant and animated world of “Sing,” the story follows Buster Moon and his friends staging a stunning version of “Thriller” to celebrate Halloween. However, they encounter unexpected wonders when a mysterious ooze transforms partygoers into dancing creatures.

The original 1983 “Thriller” music video has left a lasting cultural impact with its groundbreaking choreography and engagement, maintaining its status as a fan favorite. Chris Meledandri, the producer of “Sing: Thriller,” reflects on the enduring legacy of the song, stating, “With its infectious rhythm, iconic dance moves, and unforgettable beat, ‘Thriller’ continues to inspire people across generations.”

Aside from McConaughey, several other familiar voices reprise their roles, including those of Tori Kelly, Nick Kroll, Scarlett Johansson, and Taron Egerton. However, Reese Witherspoon, renowned for voicing Rosita in the original “Sing” films, is notably absent from this production. Critic Leslie Felperin previously described “Sing” as “a treat for both the ears and eyes,” attributing much of its charm to the talented cast.

The original “Sing” movie debuted in 2016, grossing over $600 million globally, with a successful sequel following in 2021. Written and directed by Jennings, “Sing: Thriller” is produced under the guidance of Illumination founder Chris Meledandri, with Dana Krupinski as executive producer and Nathalie Vancauwenberghe as co-producer. The series’ continued charm aims to delight existing and new audiences alike.
