India Prepares for Enthusiastic Dussehra Festivities
Dussehra, known as Vijayadashami, is a major Hindu festival observed across India, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The festival commemorates the victory of Lord Ram over the demon king Ravana, a narrative that holds deep moral significance for many in the country. This year, the celebration will take place on October 12, 2024, culminating the nine-day Navratri festivities.
The day is marked by widespread festivities, including dramatic representations of Ram’s victory, known as ‘Ramleela,’ and vibrant fairs that attract family gatherings. Schools, colleges, and many offices observe a holiday in honor of this festival, allowing people to partake in various traditional activities.
Dussehra also serves as a reminder of the forthcoming Diwali celebrations, which occur 20 days after Vijayadashami. It is a time when people begin preparations for Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights, ensuring that the joyous spirit of the season continues.
Traditional foods play a significant role during Dussehra. In Gujarat, for instance, Jalebi and Fafda are popular, symbolizing Lord Ram’s victory. Sweet Dosa, commonly prepared in Karnataka, is consumed as a prasad during Saraswati Puja on Vijayadashami. Rasgullas in West Bengal, Paan in various regions, and other delicacies like Kheer and Sabudana Khichdi are often prepared as offerings to deities.
Public figures have articulated the festival’s essence. Actor Amitabh Bachchan described Dussehra as “the eternal fight between good and evil,” while Mahatma Gandhi highlighted the moral triumph of Lord Rama. These reflections underscore the festival’s enduring cultural and ethical teachings.
