India Women Brace for High-Stakes Clash Against Pakistan in T20 World Cup
BySanjjeev K Samyal, Mumbai: The India women’s cricket team is under pressure to bounce back after a heavy defeat in their ICC T20 Women’s World Cup opener. They face their arch-rival Pakistan in a crucial group stage match at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.
India’s captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, leads a side that is widely regarded as stronger on paper than Pakistan. However, their confidence has been dented following a significant 58-run loss to New Zealand at the same venue on Friday. The Sunday encounter is expected to draw a large crowd, reviving the storied intensity of India-Pakistan encounters.
India, considered one of the pre-tournament favorites due to conditions similar to the subcontinent, struggled in their first match. They were bowled out for 102 runs in 19 overs, failing to chase a 161-run target. Despite the early advantage secured by New Zealand’s openers, Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer, with a 67-run partnership, India’s response was sluggish in all departments.
Harmanpreet Kaur remarked on the need for sharper field performance following the match. “In fielding, we made some mistakes so that is a learning for us going forward,” she stated. The team’s bowling attack faltered early, and errors like those from Renuka Thakur in the outfield and wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh were costly during the Powerplay.
India’s batting line-up faltered post the early dismissal of Smriti Mandhana, exposing their dependency on the opener. None of the subsequent batters surpassed Kaur’s 15 runs, with only five reaching double-figure scores. Experts propose a strategic batting order shift, suggesting Kaur at No.4 and Jemimah Rodrigues at No.3 to stabilize the innings.
Looking ahead, Kaur’s team will face Sri Lanka on October 9 and Australia on October 13. The Indian team maintains a 12-3 record over Pakistan in T20Is and a 5-2 lead in T20 World Cups. Yet, the pressure to win remains paramount, with only two sides advancing from each group.
Jemimah Rodrigues emphasized the importance of focusing on one game at a time. She noted, “We need to keep moving on and keep picking ourselves up. We can’t stay stuck at this game. We need to pick ourselves up, and I think that will show the character of this team.”
To ensure qualification, India not only needs victory but also requires a net run-rate improvement following their previous defeat. The upcoming match against Pakistan is, therefore, a pivotal moment in their World Cup campaign.
