Indian Government Honors Socialist Icon Karpoori Thakur With Bharat Ratna On His 100th Birth Anniversary

In a politically significant move, the Government of India has announced that it will posthumously honor Karpoori Thakur, a socialist icon and former Chief Minister of Bihar, with the prestigious Bharat Ratna on his 100th birth anniversary. Thakur will be the 49th recipient of this highest civilian award and the 15th to receive it posthumously. The announcement of the award comes as the nation celebrates Thakur’s remarkable contributions to social justice and equality.

Karpoori Thakur, born in 1924 into the Nai Samaj, one of the most backward sections of society, was a notable leader known as Jan Nayak (People’s Leader). During his tenure as Chief Minister of Bihar, he played a crucial role in the fight against social discrimination and inequality. Thakur’s commitment to affirmative action resulted in significant policy reforms that provided representation and opportunities to the poor, oppressed, exploited, and deprived sections of society. His remarkable contributions were particularly visible in areas such as education, employment, and farmer welfare.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his delight at the government’s decision to confer the Bharat Ratna on Karpoori Thakur, highlighting his lifelong dedication to uplifting the underprivileged. Modi emphasized that Thakur’s visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to social justice have left an indelible mark on India’s socio-political fabric. The award not only celebrates Thakur’s achievements but also serves as an inspiration to continue his mission of creating a more just and equitable society.

This announcement comes alongside the issuance of a commemorative coin by the Finance Ministry to mark Thakur’s birth centenary. The coin, with a denomination of ₹100, aims to celebrate and honor the contributions of the late leader. While these coins are legal tender, they are not intended for general circulation and hold a higher value due to their commemorative nature.

The Bharat Ratna award to Karpoori Thakur is a testament to his role as a symbol of democracy and social justice. It recognizes the profound impact he has made as a motivating figure for marginalized sections of society. Thakur’s life and work embody the ideals of the Indian Constitution, advocating for equality, fraternity, and justice for all. The award serves as a reminder of the values Thakur stood for, including simplicity, inclusiveness, and his tireless pursuit of social justice.
