Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his congratulations to K P Sharma Oli on being appointed the Prime Minister of Nepal, expressing a desire to enhance the strong ties between India and Nepal. In a social media post, PM Modi conveyed his enthusiasm to work closely towards bolstering the deep-rooted friendship between the two neighboring nations and to expand their mutually beneficial cooperation for the advancement and welfare of their people.

The recent political developments in Nepal saw 72-year-old K P Sharma Oli assume office as the Prime Minister for the third time, succeeding Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda. This transition signifies the formation of a new coalition government in Nepal’s political landscape.

Last week, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ faced a vote of confidence in the House of Representatives, where he lost decisively with only 63 votes in favor and 194 against him in the 275-member House. Following this, K P Sharma Oli garnered support from Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba to assert his claim to the Prime Minister’s position.

With the backing of 165 members of the House of Representatives, including 77 from his party and 88 from the Nepali Congress, K P Sharma Oli was formalized as the Prime Minister of Nepal under the CPN-UML-Nepali Congress coalition. President Ram Chandra Paudel oversaw this constitutional transition according to Article 76 (2) of the Nepali Constitution.

On the day of oath-taking, K P Sharma Oli and his newly appointed Cabinet members were sworn in at Shital Niwas, the presidential building in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital. A seasoned politician, K P Sharma Oli previously served as Prime Minister from 2015 to 2016 and from 2018 to 2021, bringing a wealth of experience to his new tenure as the Prime Minister of Nepal.
