Indian Woman Questions Life Quality Compared to UK Cousin

New Delhi, India – A 21-year-old woman from Gujarat has sparked a significant conversation on social media after contrasting her life in India with that of her cousin who moved to the United Kingdom. In a post shared on Reddit, she shared her experiences and asked if life in Western countries is truly better than in India.
The woman, an engineering student, wrote, “Personally, I would say yes. My cousin and I are the same age. Both 21. She moved to the UK with her family when she was 14 and I stayed in India.” She explained that despite their close bond and shared educational paths, their opportunities have diverged significantly.
The cousin, currently studying aerospace engineering in Wales, frequently travels and has secured two well-paying internships that allow for a good work-life balance, including an offer from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). In contrast, the woman in Gujarat is struggling with a demanding 10-hour internship that pays her Rs 12,000 per month, leading to a feeling of disparity.
“I struggle to get good internships,” she noted. “At my last internship, I worked 10 hours a day and was paid 12k a month. College workload is a lot, and teachers aren’t the best. It’s hard to find good jobs, and most pay really low.”
Her post has received various reactions, with some sympathizing with her plight and others suggesting that comparing lives across different countries is unproductive. One user commented, “You can literally go to any country you want and do a Master’s if you believe the West has better opportunities.”
Conversely, another user pointed out the complexities and challenges that exist in Western nations, including rising racism and the difficulty of having non-Western qualifications recognized.
The Reddit post has gained traction, highlighting the ongoing debate about quality of life in India versus Western countries. “A lot of people tell me living abroad is terrible but I think it is still better than India,” she concluded.
