Indiana Sees Heaviest Snowfall in Years, Topping 13 Inches in Some Areas

INDIANAPOLIS — A powerful winter storm blanketed Indiana with its heaviest snowfall in years, bringing up to 13 inches of snow to some areas and marking a dramatic shift from recent mild winters. The storm, which began on January 5, 2024, and continued into January 6, delivered widespread snowfall across the state, with the heaviest accumulations south of Interstate 70.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Indianapolis recorded 7.8 inches of snow at its official measuring site near the airport, making it the city’s snowiest storm since February 2021. The storm’s impact varied significantly across the state, with some areas, such as North Vernon in Jennings County, reporting 13 inches of snow. Other notable totals included 12 inches in Westport and 11 inches in Brownsburg.
