Indianapolis Snow Plow Trucks Winter Storm

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — As a winter storm sweeps through Indiana, the city of Indianapolis has activated its Indy Snow Force, deploying 70 trucks to salt and clear roads around the clock. The Department of Public Works (DPW) is leading the effort, with additional contractors on standby if needed. The storm, expected to last through Sunday and Monday, has prompted officials to prioritize safety and mobility for residents.

The Indy Snow Force map, a real-time tracking tool, has been activated to provide updates on road conditions and plowing progress. The DPW’s winter weather operations team is responsible for maintaining over 4,000 lane miles of thoroughfares, secondary streets, and residential roads. ‘This will be a long fight for our crew,’ said a DPW spokesperson, emphasizing the scale of the operation.

Hoosiers are encouraged to monitor the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) website for updates on traffic conditions, road closures, and travel times. The site also offers live plow locations and camera feeds to help drivers navigate safely. INDOT advises against unnecessary travel during the storm and urges motorists to exercise caution on icy roads.

Safe driving tips have been widely shared, with experts recommending smooth, deliberate movements when operating a vehicle in winter conditions. ‘Don’t be a jerk,’ writes Car and Driver Magazine, emphasizing the importance of avoiding sudden steering, braking, or acceleration. If a vehicle begins to skid, drivers should take their foot off the accelerator, avoid slamming the brakes, and steer gently in the direction they want to go.

For front-wheel skids, drivers should aim the vehicle toward their intended path, while rear-wheel skids require turning the steering wheel in the same direction as the skid. Lightly tapping the brakes can help regain control. These techniques are crucial for preventing accidents on icy roads.
