Indy 500 Live Updates: Race Unfolds Amid Crashes and Controversies

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500 is underway, featuring 33 cars in an intense race for the historic “Yard of Bricks.” The event began under caution due to rain delays, but excitement quickly shifted gears as drivers tackled 200 laps around the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Pole-sitter Robert Shwartzman‘s day ended early after a pit lane incident where he lost control, hitting multiple crew members before crashing into the wall. He expressed shock after the mishap, saying, “Honestly, it felt really strange. I wasn’t sure if it was the brakes or because the tires were cold.” A crew member received medical treatment but is reportedly stable.
Notable retirements from the race included Kyle Larson, who crashed into the wall on a restart after a caution period. Larson admitted to being eager during the restart, stating, “Bummed out,” about the race’s end for him. His crash also took out rookie driver Sting Ray Robb, showing the dangers of the high-speed Indy 500.
Takuma Sato, racing for his third victory, started second and maintained the lead heading into the middle of the race. “It’s a great feeling to be up front,” he said during a pit stop. David Malukas closely trails him, with Alex Palou and Conor Daly also in contention.
The race continues to thrill fans, with over 300,000 expected at the track. As the laps tick down, eyes are on Josef Newgarden, who is attempting to win his third consecutive Indy 500. Newgarden, however, has faced challenges but remains in the fight for the lead.
With many laps and strategies still ahead, the competition intensifies as drivers push their limits in pursuit of victory and a glass of milk at the finish line.
