Innovative Safety Upgrade Project To Prevent Commuter Falls At Sydney Train Platforms

Sydney Trains is implementing a groundbreaking safety upgrade project to enhance passenger safety at train platforms across the Sydney network. Led by Executive Director Nev Nichols, the initiative aims to reduce incidents of commuters falling through platform gaps.

Following successful installations at high-traffic platforms like Circular Quay, Town Hall, Wynyard, Chatswood, and Bondi Junction, an additional $9 million will be allocated to install a rubber gap filler at 20 more station platforms identified as high-risk areas.

Notably, Redfern Station has witnessed a significant number of incidents, prompting recent installations to mitigate falls. The project has garnered positive results, with no recorded incidents at platforms where the solution has been deployed since 2021.

In a parallel effort, Sydney Metro Southwest is set to undergo a comprehensive transformation, with plans to install mechanical gap fillers at eight heritage stations along the line. As project director Alia Karaman highlighted, catering to diverse station layouts and infrastructure poses unique challenges.

The mechanical gap fillers are part of the broader initiative to align the Bankstown Line with driverless train standards. Korean manufacturer Hyundai Movex has been contracted to provide the necessary equipment, further showcasing Sydney’s commitment to rail safety.

Transport Minister Jo Haylen emphasized the importance of customized solutions to address platform safety issues. The collaborative efforts between Sydney Trains and Sydney Metro Southwest underscore a pivotal advancement in commuter safety measures.
