Inspection Criticizes Northamptonshire Fire Service for Lack of Progress
Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) has been evaluated by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS), which reported a “lack of progress” in several areas. Despite some positives, the inspection highlighted significant issues regarding cultural and operational improvements.
Nikki Watson, who was appointed as Northamptonshire’s fire chief in May, expressed her dissatisfaction with the findings. “I am disappointed we haven’t made enough progress in creating an inclusive culture,” she stated. Watson acknowledged the challenges posed by frequent leadership changes, which have hindered effective decision-making.
Inspector Roy Wilsher noted that while some middle managers demonstrated exemplary conduct, others did not align with the values expected. He emphasized that “cultural change takes a long time,” and acknowledged the disruptions caused by leadership transitions.
The HMICFRS report called for immediate improvements in preventing fire risks, promoting fair values, and fostering diversity within the service. However, it found the NFRS adequate in its response to emergencies, resource management, and leadership development. The service was praised for its effective collaboration with the police in multi-agency responses and sound budget management.
In response to the report, Watson reiterated her commitment to lead the service through necessary changes, emphasizing that cultural transformation is an extended journey. She expressed gratitude to the firefighters and staff for their ongoing efforts and pledged to pursue the goal of becoming an outstanding fire and rescue service.
Northamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Danielle Stone voiced her support for Watson’s leadership. Stone promised to “push on” with the required improvements and to advocate for increased funding to enhance service provision to the public.
