DES MOINES, Iowa — Governor Kim Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa to be lowered to half-staff on October 25, honoring the late Senator Claire Celsi. This gesture coincides with a ceremony celebrating her life, scheduled to take place on the same day.

In a statement, Reynolds described Celsi as “an impassioned voice for Central Iowa constituents,” acknowledging her years of advocacy in the State House. “Even while privately battling illness, Claire made it a point to return to her post during this year’s legislative session and stand for her beliefs. Our family is praying for Claire’s loved ones at this time,” Reynolds said.

Celsi, a Democrat from West Des Moines, passed away on October 6 after entering hospice care in September due to a terminal illness. She served three terms in the Iowa Senate, representing the greater Des Moines area. During her tenure, Celsi held the position of ranking member on the Senate Government Oversight Committee and was actively involved in several other standing committees.

A celebration of Celsi’s life will be celebrated from 1-4 p.m. at the West Des Moines Valley High School cafeteria, located at 3650 Woodland Ave. Her family has called for the public to remember her legacy and contributions.

According to the Governor’s office, flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building, the Capitol Complex, and across all public buildings in Iowa on the designated day. Citizens, schools, and businesses are encouraged to show respect by lowering their flags as well.

Looking forward, a special election is set for December 30 to fill Celsi’s vacant seat in the Iowa Senate, allowing voters to choose her successor.
